Augmentation of Sewer Pump Station

Client
Lachlan Shire Council
Location
Condobolin, NSW
PROJECT OVERVIEW

The project involved augmentation of the sewer pump station at Lachlan Street in Condobolin. The expansion works involved converting the station from a dry/wet well type to a wet well (submersible) type, and upgrade of the pump station flow capacity to meet future demand.

Scope of Works

The project involved constructing a bypass system equipped with temporary pumps and a switchboard featuring a SCADA system. This system was connected to a DN1200mm storage, integrating it with the current sewer outlet to transform the existing sewer pump station into a wet well. The dry and wet wells were refurbished with the epoxy coating  in accordance with technical specifications. Subsequently, the old SCADA system was disconnected and replaced with a new switchboard. An automated monorail system was introduced, with the installation of new valves and flowmeter pits, along with all necessary pipes and fittings, linking them to the existing sewer manhole. Additionally, a vent shaft was incorporated into the system. Once the upgraded works were completed, the new pump station was commissioned and the bypass system was taken offline and disconnected.

Project Challenges and Risks

Several challenges and risks were encountered throughout the project, including:

  • Limited space for installing the temporary bypass system due to constrained real estate.
  • Extended lead times of 14 to 16 weeks for the pumps.
  • Lengthy lead times of 6 to 10 weeks for both temporary and permanent switchboards.
  • Delays caused by extended lead times for fusion bonded fittings required for fabricated pipes.
  • Project interruptions due to stop-and-start cycles caused by subcontractor availability and delays in materials and fittings procurement.
