PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project involved extending the sewer main system at Beaver Place in Walcha, including the installation of a rising main and gravity main pipeline. It encompassed the construction of 11 new sewer manholes and the connection to a newly installed sewer pump station equipped with a SCADA system.

Scope of Works

The project entailed the design and construction of essential infrastructure components:
• Installation of 770m of 150mm PVC SN4 DWV pipe for the gravity main, along with the construction of 11 sewer manholes measuring 1050mm in diameter, reaching a maximum depth of 2.5m.
• Deployment of 1600m of 100mm PVC-O PN16 rising main, complete with air valve and scour valve as per AS & WSAA standards, seamlessly integrating with the existing infrastructure.
• Incorporation of a 2.2m diameter x 6m depth chamber storage equipped with a flyght pump and control panel, facilitating the integration of a SCADA system. This system was seamlessly connected to the existing power sub-station.

Project Challenges/Risks

The project encountered several challenges:
• Excavating hard rock along the gravity main route, spanning approximately 95m, led to delays in the timeline as extensive time was required for rock removal.
• Long lead times for the rising main pipe, attributed to color coding and manhole segments, further contributed to project delays.
• Elevated accommodation costs resulted in an increase in LAFHA (Living Away From Home Allowance), consequently reducing the project’s revenue margin.
