Nanima Village Civil Works

The Nanima Village Roads to Home Project was delivered under a GC21 contract as part of the NSW Government Roads to Home Program, which aims to improve infrastructure, servicing standards, and long-term liveability within discrete Aboriginal communities across New South Wales.

Located on Wiradjuri land near Wellington, the project involved significant civil infrastructure upgrades to support the subdivision process and enhance essential services for the Nanima Village community. Delivered in close collaboration with the Wellington Local Aboriginal Land Council, the works improved road networks, drainage, water and sewer services, public spaces, and future utility connectivity for approximately 21 dwellings.

Scope of Works

• Obtained the Subdivision Works Certificate and all required approvals.
• Removal and reconstruction of existing road pavements throughout the village.
• Construction of approximately 1,360 metres of standard kerb and gutter.
• Construction of approximately 506 metres of standard kerb and 38 metres of modified kerb.
• Construction of new turning heads at both ends of Nanima Road.
• Removal and replacement of approximately 1,866m² of footpaths.
• Construction of new stormwater drainage infrastructure and roof water drainage systems to existing dwellings.
• Supply and installation of new water mains throughout the village.
• Installation of new water meters to all residential properties.
• Removal of two existing septic tanks and construction of a new sewer main network.
• Construction of new concrete driveway crossovers to selected lots.
• Repair and upgrade of the existing basketball court.
• Construction of new road and parking access to the community playground.
• Landscaping works, including street tree planting at each dwelling and turf installation adjacent to kerb lines.
• Relocation of an existing Essential Energy power pole.
• Construction of concrete pits and conduit infrastructure for future NBN services.
• Completion of all associated civil, drainage, utility, reinstatement, and finishing works.

Project Challenges

• Community and Stakeholder Engagement
  Working within a live residential Aboriginal community required ongoing consultation and collaboration with the Wellington Local Aboriginal Land Council, residents, Dubbo Regional Council, and other key stakeholders to minimise disruption and maintain positive community outcomes.
• Maintaining Access and Essential Services
  Careful staging of works was required to ensure continuous access to homes, emergency services, and community facilities while construction activities were underway.
• Working Around Existing Infrastructure
  The project involved extensive coordination around existing underground utilities and live services, requiring service locating, investigation, and careful excavation practices to avoid service interruptions.
• Sewer and Drainage Upgrades
  The removal of existing septic infrastructure and installation of new sewer and stormwater systems required detailed planning, environmental controls, and strict compliance with safety and operational requirements.
• Utility Coordination
  Close coordination with Essential Energy and other service providers was required to facilitate power pole relocation, future NBN infrastructure installation, and the management of service conflicts throughout the project.
• Environmental and Cultural Considerations
  As works were undertaken within a culturally significant Aboriginal community, environmental controls and culturally sensitive construction practices were implemented throughout the project to protect the surrounding environment and respect community values.
