Nyngan Cobar Water Security

Trazlbat delivered the construction of a major off-river water storage and transfer system, comprising a 70ML in-ground reservoir, associated pump station infrastructure, a river intake system, and a 2km DN675 rising main. The project formed a critical component of regional water security, significantly increasing storage capacity and improving supply reliability.

The works included large-scale earthworks, mechanical and pipeline installation, electrical and automation systems, and full integration of telemetry and control systems to enable efficient and automated operation of the water transfer network.

Scope of Works

• Construction of a 70ML in-ground water storage reservoir, including approximately 225,000m³ of excavation and spoil removal.
• Supply and construction of associated pump station infrastructure.
• Installation of electrical, telemetry, and automation systems.
• Construction and installation of a river intake system.
• Supply and installation of approximately 2km of DN675 rising main.
• Excavation, trenching, bedding, pipe installation, backfilling, and compaction works.
• Integration and commissioning of mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
• Testing, commissioning, and handover of the complete water transfer system.
• Site reinstatement and environmental management of all disturbed areas.

Project Challenges

• Working in extreme heat conditions, with temperatures reaching up to 48°C, requiring strict heat safety management and modified work practices.
• Managing deep excavations up to 11 metres, requiring extensive use of shoring boxes and sheet piling systems.
• Coordinating large-scale earthworks involving the movement of approximately 225,000m³ of material within a compressed five-month program.
• Ensuring safe operation of heavy machinery in high-risk excavation environments.
• Maintaining construction productivity while managing geotechnical, environmental, and safety constraints.
• Coordinating multiple disciplines including civil, mechanical, electrical, and automation works.
